Warren Gatland admits this weekend is all about development for Wales after naming a starting XV to take on South Africa that shows 13 changes from the one that finished the 2018 NatWest 6 Nations.

Only George North and Cory Hill remain from the team that defeated France in round five of the 2018 Championship to secure second spot in the table.

But this weekend, they take on the Springboks in Washington DC and scrum-half Tomos Williams will make his international debut after being handed the No.9 jersey.

Williams is paired with Gareth Anscombe in the half backs while North joins Owen Watkin in midfield. The back three sees Tom Prydie and Steff Evans line up on the wings either side of Hallam Amos, who wears No.15.

Up front, Nicky Smith, Elliot Dee and Dillon Lewis pack down, with Hill and Bradley Davies in the second row.

Ellis Jenkins captains from the back row with Ross Moriarty at No.8 and Seb Davies on the blindside, and Gatland cannot wait to see how his new-look side shape up.

“Saturday is a huge opportunity for this squad and for players individually,” he said.

“Everything we are doing is geared for the RWC in 15 months’ time and the next three matches are a hugely important part of our development.

“This weekend is an opportunity for players to build on their test rugby experience and lay a marker down for the jersey, and for the position going forward.

“I think there are exciting selections across the team and I’m looking forward to Saturday to see what we are able to do against the Springboks.”

The Springboks have also named a new-look side, with seven debutants in the starting XV, while Gatland has gone for a blend of youth and experience on the bench.

Ryan Elias, Wyn Jones and Rhodri Jones cover the front row, with Adam Beard and Aaron Wainwright for company as pack replacements.

While the back-line replacements are Aled Davies, Rhys Patchell and Hadleigh Parkes, although Patchell will undergo a late fitness test and could be replaced by Gareth Davies.   WALES TEAM TO PLAY SOUTH AFRICA (Saturday June 2 KO 17:00 local – live on Channel 4)
