Shade Munro believes home advantage can give his side the perfect start to their Women’s Six Nations campaign.
Scotland Women kick off the Championship with a Friday night thriller against Italy at a packed out Scotstoun and the ex-international has only one thing on his mind ahead of the clash – winning.
With Munro’s side posting positive results from their winter campaign against Spain, Canada and next week’s opponents Italy, the head coach believes his side could turn a few heads.
“As a developing team, we need to start winning games,” he said. “We hadn’t won a lot for a number of years.
“I am pleased our first game is at home because I believe it gives us a better chance of getting off to a good start.
“The quality of rugby has really improved in the four years I have been involved in the Women’s Six Nations.
“In our last two games we scored eight tries, and that is certainly something we were not able to do previously.
Scotland exhibited their potent attacking arsenal in the narrow defeat to Spain as a two-try blitz from Hannah Smith marked her return to the international set-up in style.
After a vigorous warm-up process Munro believes his side are better prepared than ever to face the challenge of the Championship’s best and brightest.
“We may have lost against Spain at the weekend, but playing test matches at this time of year is something completely new for us so we can take many positives from it,” said the seven-time capped Scotland international.
“We played Italy, Ireland and Canada in test matches and it is very important for a country like us to play against these big teams to further our development ahead of a tournament like the Women’s Six Nations.
“I was encouraged with how we performed against Canada, and I am thrilled we managed to score four tries against Spain over in Madrid.”
