  • Loosehead prop returns less than a year after retiring from international rugby.
  • Fly-half Danny Cipriani is also named, while there are four uncapped players in the squad.

Joe Marler has come out of international retirement and been named in England’s Rugby World Cup 2019 training squad.

The prop won 59 England caps and was part of the side that won back-to-back Six Nations titles in 2016 and 2017.

The 28-year-old chose to retire and spend more time with his family in September 2018 but has made himself available again and Jones has wasted no time in recalling him to his 35-man training squad.

Fly-half Danny Cipriani is also included, while wing Jack Nowell, lock George Kruis and prop Mako Vunipola will be part of the camp, even though they are not among the 35 players chosen, as they continue their rehabilitation from injury.

Jones said: “I saw Joe during the Barbarians’ week and he indicated that he had a desire to come back.

“We have since had a couple of chats and we have given him the opportunity to do that. Now, it is up to him to show us what he has got.”

Jones has also picked four uncapped players in scrum-half Willi Heinz, England Under-20s forward Lewis Ludlam, hooker Jack Singleton and former sevens winger Ruaridh McConnochie.

The squad will meet at the Lensbury Hotel on Sunday for their first official training camp, while they face four warm-up matches in August and September – starting against Six Nations rivals Wales on August 11.

England start their World Cup campaign against Tonga on September 22.
