Wales have been boosted ahead of the 2020 Guinness Six Nations by the news that Rhys Webb will be considered for selection despite the scrum-half not returning to the country until the summer.

It was announced earlier this week that Webb will rejoin Ospreys, who he previously spent ten years with, at the end of the season after French side Toulon agreed to release him from his contract 12 months early.

The 31-year-old joined the French side in 2018 on a three-year deal but will now return to the Welsh side for family reasons.

The move to France originally ruled Webb out of contention for Wales, whose selection as policy prevents players based outside the country who have less than 60 caps from being picked.

However, the Welsh Rugby Union have provided a “six-month dispensation from the Senior Player Selection Policy” to allow Webb to be selected for the remainder of the season following his commitment to Ospreys.

This means that new Wales head coach Wayne Pivac will be able to call on a Test British & Irish Lion and a man with 33 caps to his name, and who featured during Wales’ 2012 Grand Slam triumph, which bolsters the already strong scrum-half stocks which feature Gareth Davies, Tomos Williams and Aled Davies.
