The countdown to the 2020 Guinness Six Nations is almost over, and as anticipation continues to build for the big kick-off the official Fantasy Rugby Game offers the opportunity to keep an even closer eye on all the Championship’s goings-on.

With a few tweaks having been made to last year’s format, it’s vital you’re aware how to score as many points as possible in your quest for Guinness Six Nations glory.

The budget available to build your squad has decreased to 230 points, meaning a strong rugby knowledge will help ensure you pick the best squad possible with balance across all areas of the pitch. Italian props are just as important as English fly-halves here!

But with a maximum of four players allowed from each nation, and restrictions on the number of players allowed in each position, it’s imperative you make the best choices to optimise the number of points you score.

It is possible to modify your team between Guinness Six Nations rounds but be well aware that a player’s value evolves during the competition according to their performances on the pitch.

How points are calculated

Each team must feature 15 regular players, who will earn points based on what they do in their team’s matches.

Every player on the field will earn you ‘team’ points depending on the result of the match – applied in proportion to their presence on the field – and ‘rugby player’ points depending on their individual statistics during the game.

The designated captain’s points will be doubled on the round and a bonus of 20 points will also be awarded to you.

Any players on the substitutes bench will earn you half their points, while a nominated supersub will see their points tripled if they enter the game as a replacement during their real match. If he is a starter, or does not play, his points will be divided by two as for all the other substitutes.

Tackling the numbers

If one of your inclusions is playing at home, a win earns your team 12 points, while a draw and a defeat are worth four points and one point respectively.

These numbers increase if a member of your squad is playing away, with a win worth 18 points, a draw ten points and a defeat three points.

There is also points difference to bear in mind, with 0.5 points added or taken away for every point separating the two teams in each player’s match.

Individually, tries contribute 15 points to your team, with try conversions and penalties both worth three points. Each drop goal adds six points to your total, while attacking success is further rewarded with two points for every defender beaten and 0.3 points for every carried metre.

But defence is rewarded as well, with each tackle worth one point, while those deemed a dominant tackle are worth two points to your total.

Each fixture’s official Guinness Six Nations player of the match is rewarded with 15 points, while yellow and red cards result in subsequent deductions of five and ten points respectively.

So, while you prepare to feast your eyes on the upcoming Guinness Six Nations drama, why not get busy organising your team to see if you have the managerial nous to earn Championship glory in either the general league, or in a private league with your friends.
