Ireland prop Tadhg Furlong has extended his IRFU deal by an extra 12 months to the end of the 2021-2022 season.

The tighthead made his Ireland debut in 2015 and has since won 49 Ireland caps and three for the Lions after touring New Zealand in 2017.

He will again wear Lions red this summer after Warren Gatland picked him to tour South Africa just four months after returning from almost a year out due to injury.

Furlong was part of the Ireland side that won the 2018 Grand Slam and says he is looking forward to competing for more trophies next season.

“Happy to sign on for one more year,” he said.

“There have been some tough days of late but I believe the squads we have in both Leinster and Ireland are able to compete for trophies in the future.

“I look forward to hopefully playing at a packed out RDS or Aviva Stadium in the months ahead.”

Furlong is the latest Ireland international to sign a new contract, following the likes of Johnny Sexton, Iain Henderson and Keith Earls this year.
