Grant Gilchrist will captain Scotland this summer as Gregor Townsend has announced a 40-man squad to take on Chile and Argentina.

Gilchrist will captain his country for the first time since 2018, after reaching his 50th cap in the defeat to Wales in the Guinness Six Nations in February.

Scotland ‘A’ face Chile on Saturday 25 June, before Scotland embark on a three-Test series against Argentina on Saturday 2, 9 and 16 July.

There are six uncapped players in the squad, with a trio from Edinburgh, Ben Muncaster, Glen Young and Matt Currie, London Irish’s Kyle Rowe and two Glasgow Warriors players Murphy Walker and Ollie Smith searching for their first Scotland caps.

There is a return to the squad for Scott Cummings, Rory Darge and Matt Fagerson after being ruled out through injury, while Rory Sutherland, Jamie Bhatti and Jonny Gray also return after missing the bulk of the Guinness Six Nations.

British & Irish Lions quartet Ali Price, Duhan van der Merwe, Zander Fagerson and Hamish Watson are all included, with Watson set to make his 50th Scottish appearance.

Huw Jones and Rory Hutchinson have both excelled in the Gallagher Premiership for Harlequins and Northampton Saints respectively and are both recalled, while Saracens’ back rower Andy Christie retains his place after making his debut against France during the 2022 Championship.

George Horne, who scored a brace last time Scotland travelled to Argentina in a 44-15 win in 2018, is joined by Damian Hoyland in returning to the squad after missing the Guinness Six Nations.

Regular captain Stuart Hogg and senior players Finn Russell and Chris Harris are rested while Jamie Ritchie has not yet recovered from injury.
