Dan Biggar is confident Wales will not repeat wasteful mistakes in their second Test against South Africa this Saturday.
Wales will face an almost completely changed side at the Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein as Rassie Erasmus named a shocking 14 changes to his starting XV.
Wales lost 32-29 in their first test last weekend after Damian Willemse broke hearts with a last-minute penalty kick.
But captain Biggar believes his team will capitalise on a strong start and rise to their full potential to gain victory on Saturday.
He said: “I thought we were good value for our lead at half-time, admittedly we just let them back in. We made probably, in the build-up to the first couple of tries they scored, I think we made six errors on the bounce.
“Which against a team like South Africa, coughs up field position, coughs up possession and you’re in the driving line.
“And that’s something that we need to make sure we’re better at.
“We were spot on the money with our approach last week and there were a couple of key moments we didn’t quite get right.
“We didn’t surprise ourselves because we believed in what we were doing but the performance has given us a real boost this week.”
Wales gave away a total of 19 points in penalties and saw four players sent to the sin-bin in an edgy battle.
Biggar, Alun Wyn Jones, Louis Rees-Zammit and Rhys Carre were all shown yellow to add pressure to Wayne Pivac’s side as they saw their strong lead whittle away.
And the captain admitted that in the lead-up to the second Test, Wales have put a strong focus on keeping in control.
“We’ve targeted a little bit of our discipline. You’re always going to be under a little bit of pressure when you give that many penalties away, rightly or wrongly.
“So I think from our point of view, that’s a big thing and not doubling up on errors.
“A big focus for us this week is if we make an error or concede a penalty, the next phase of play is really important for us.
“Because if you double up or treble up then you’re in a bit of trouble against this team.
“We’re probably a little bit more cautious this week and aware that they’re in really good form. But there’s no doubt that if we can play in the right areas and look to put South Africa under pressure then there will be cracks in their defence for us to exploit.”
Pivac has made just one change to his starting XV, with Alex Cuthbert replacing Josh Adams on the wing for his 52nd cap.
Sam Wainwright could be in line to make his senior international debut from the bench as he joins Adams and Alun Wyn Jones as changes among the replacements.
Biggar’s squad will be in for a challenge against a fresh-faced and in-form South Africa squad on Saturday but have hopes that they can repeat another strong start to claim victory.
He said: “I know that the side we played last weekend were renowned, experienced, World Cup winners but this team, they’ve got some really exciting in-form players.
“When I saw they had made 14 changes I was wondering who they would bring in but I don’t expect this to be anything other than an incredibly tough game on Saturday.
“I think there are lots of changes to the team but I don’t believe that many of the changes weaken their team.
“Admittedly I think last week was disappointing the way it came to an end but we’re really looking forward to this weekend to go one better.
“Just another chance to go test ourselves against the world champions.”
