Eddie Jones has been dismissed as England’s head coach following an RFU review into performances during the Autumn Nations Series.

England won just one of their four matches in the autumn and were beaten by Argentina and South Africa at Twickenham, concluding their worst calendar year of results since 2008.

The decision to remove Jones brings an end to his seven-year spell in charge which has included three Guinness Six Nations titles, the first of which was won with a Grand Slam in 2016.

Jones also led England to the World Cup final in 2019 but England will be under fresh management for the 2023 tournament, which begins in September, while next year’s Guinness Six Nations will represent the first test for the new coach.

Richard Cockerill will take interim charge, with the RFU to announce further changes to the coaching structure ‘in the near future’.

RFU CEO Bill Sweeney said: “It is important to recognise the huge contribution Eddie has made to English rugby, winning three Six Nations Championships, one Grand Slam and taking us to a Rugby World Cup final.

“He has the highest win ratio of any previous England head coach and has helped develop the leadership skills of many players and coaches.

“I am grateful to Eddie for all he has done for England across many areas of the game and the professional way in which he has approached reviewing the performance of the team.

“He has provided the panel with astute insight and meaningful lessons that will support the team performance going forward.”

Jones said: “I am pleased with much that we have achieved as an England team and I look forward to watching the team’s performance in the future.

“Many of the players and I will no doubt keep in touch and I wish them all well in their future careers.”

England are the second Guinness Six Nations side to change their head coach in as many days, following the return of Warren Gatland to the Wales job on Monday.
