Ewan Ashman caused a stir on debut with the decisive try as Scotland beat Australia at BT Murrayfield and the hooker’s score has been chosen by the fans as the best try of week two of the Autumn Nations Series.
The 21-year-old was only included in Scotland’s matchday squad because Stuart McInally was ruled out through illness, and when George Turner was forced off after ten minutes with a shoulder injury, Ashman entered the fray.
He thrived in his first taste of international rugby, excelling at the set-piece and getting stuck in around the park.
And his crowning moment came in the second half when he received the ball on the left wing with the try-line at his mercy but Izaia Perese racing across to make the tackle.
Most wingers would have been proud of the way Ashman controlled his body to ride the impact of Perese, reach out at dot down the ball before any part of him landed in touch.
In the 15-13 victory, it was Ashman’s try that proved decisive as Scotland made it three wins in a row against the Wallabies.
And the score clearly resonated with the fans, with 1382 choosing Ashman’s try as the Try of the Week on a weekend of fine scores in the Autumn Nations Series.
His score was selected ahead of Ireland winger Andrew Conway’s first try in the win over Japan, as well as Sevu Reece’s score for the All Blacks against Italy and Marcus Smith’s effort against Tonga.
