The Rugby Championship delivered thrilling rugby once again, with South Africa's uncompromising victory over Argentina clinching them the title.

With the Southern Hemisphere’s finest now setting their sights on Europe for the Autumn Nations Series in November, here’s a look back at the standout moments and what’s in store as these teams head north.

Springboks: Triumph of grit and power

South Africa won their first Rugby Championship title since 2019 with a resounding 48-7 win over Argentina, powered by a trademark physicality. Eben Etzebeth, who became South Africa’s most-capped player during the match, was instrumental throughout the tournament. His presence in the lineouts and around the park was immense, reminding everyone why he’s considered by many as the best lock in world rugby.

The Springboks’ defensive game, led by captain Siya Kolisi (Sharks) and Pieter-Steph du Toit (Toyota Verblitz) and supported by backline stars like Aphelele Fassi (Sharks) and Kurt-Lee Arendse (Bulls), frustrated opponents at every turn. Kolisi was a talismanic figure as he continues to inspire his team. Rassie Erasmus' structured approach worked wonders, blending the brute force of their forwards with the finesse of their backline. Rotating his team for the penultimate match against the Pumas was a calculated risk. If it backfired in the short term, it only served to make the final round even more dramatic.

As they head into the Autumn Nations Series, the Springboks will be looking to extend their dominance against three of the European powerhouses: Ireland, France, and England.

All Blacks: Still a force, but work to do

While South Africa took the title, the All Blacks had their moments of brilliance, particularly in their comprehensive 34-18 win over Australia, where they shut out the Wallabies in the second half. Ardie Savea (Moana Pasifika) once again shone for New Zealand, showcasing his all-round game. Will Jordan’s (Crusaders) pace and creativity were also highlights, making the All Blacks one of the most dangerous teams with the ball in hand.

New Zealand will travel to Europe for the Autumn Nations Series eager to refine their game under new head coach Scott Robertson, taking on England, Ireland, France and Italy. With consistency issues still plaguing their performances, the Autumn campaign will be critical for the All Blacks as they aim to reassert a dominance that was once unquestioned.

Argentina: Rising Pumas show their bite

Argentina may have fallen short in their final clash against South Africa, but under new head coach Felipe Contepomi they have been one of the success stories of the tournament. This was the first time they have beaten all three of their opponents in the competition - including a record victory against Australia. Blindside Pablo Matera (Honda Heat) and fly-half Santiago Carreras (Gloucester) were among the standout performers for the Pumas, whose only flaw appears to be an inability to back up a big victory with an equally robust performance.

The Pumas are now looking ahead to their European tour, where they’ll face tough tests against Italy, Ireland, and France in the Autumn Nations Series. With a well-balanced squad and improving set-piece play, Argentina will be keen to carry their momentum into the Northern Hemisphere, aiming to build on their growing reputation as a formidable rugby force.

Wallabies: A year of transition

2024 was a rebuilding year for the Wallabies under the highly-regarded Joe Schmidt, as they continue to tinker with combinations and tactics. While their results were disappointing - with only one win to show in this latest Rugby Championship - individual talents like openside Fraser McReight (Reds) and centre Len Ikitau (Brumbies) showed promise for the near future.

Australia will look to bounce back - in fact, they'll feel they have no choice but to - in the Autumn Nations Series, where they face Wales, England, and Italy. These are teams Schmidt has overcome on several occasions during his hugely successful time in charge of Ireland. The Wallabies will need to find their new identity under fast under the Kiwi if they hope to lift their game - not least with a British and Irish Lions tour on the horizon.

Europe beckons

As the Rugby Championship draws to a close, the focus now shifts to the Autumn Nations Series, where the Southern Hemisphere giants will face Europe’s elite. The Springboks, in particular, will be eyeing statement wins as they clash with Scotland, England and Wales. For the All Blacks, the opportunity to test their mettle against the likes of France and Ireland will provide critical insights into the game's global hierarchy.

Argentina and Australia, meanwhile, will relish the chance to measure themselves against strong European opposition, seeking to build on the progress made during the Rugby Championship. With players like Savea, Matera, Ikitau and Fassi shining brightly, the stage is set for an exciting Autumn Nations Series campaign as these rugby giants collide once more on the global stage.
