COFFEE DATE: CAMERON WINNETT

CAM WINNETT
Cardiff and Wales fullback Cam Winnett has enjoyed a meteoric rise to Test rugby.

We caught up with the 21-year-old to see what’s what.

What’s your coffee of choice? Probably a flat white. To be honest, I’m not big coffee fan, but that’s the drink I see most other people have, so I choose that. At Cardiff, we’ll go for a coffee at Barker, or when we’re in Wales camp at the Vale we’ll go to The Thirsty Elephant.

What are you watching on TV? Love Island. I’m really enjoying it at the minute.

Who’s your best mate in rugby? In camp right now, that would be Alex Mann. We’ve come through the ranks together since we were at college in Coleg y Cymoedd.

Are you a big gamer? I do love gaming. Mason Grady would be up there as well. We play UFC against each other quite a lot, and they’re always tight matches. I back myself in FIFA too. Liverpool are my go-to team. I’m a big Liverpool fan.

Where do you call home? Wattstown in the Rhondda. It’s a very close community. All my family live up there. I’ve got my cousins next next door, my auntie’s behind me, and my parents are just up the road.

What’s your ideal holiday destination? I love Tenerife, and I’ve been to Marmaris in Turkey a few times as well. I’d like to go to Dubai one day.

What are the biggest challenges for you as a professional athlete? I do struggle with putting on weight, so trying to keep on top of that outside the rugby environment can be challenging.

And what’s the best thing about your job? Playing with my mates. The fact that I’ve played with someone like ‘Manny’ through college, under-18s, under-20s. Now watching him score two tries in two matches for Wales, I’m chuffed for him.

Which teammate would be your ideal backpacking companion? Me and Mason Grady get along really well. I’d definitely enjoy travelling with him.

Ireland v Wales, Saturday 24th February, 14:15, Aviva Stadium, Dublin.
