Former Chief Commercial Officer Craig Maxwell, who has been battling a rare form of inoperable lung cancer, set out to raise £1 million for cancer charities while also creating lasting memories with his young family. His resilience and determination in the face of such adversity have touched the hearts of many across the rugby community and beyond.
The award, celebrated by his family, friends, and supporters, honours his selflessness and dedication to making a difference. Speaking to ITV Wales, Craig said, “To me, this award isn’t just about me. It’s about my family, my friends, and everyone who’s supported me along the way. It’s about making sure my children know I did everything I could.”
Craig's work has not only been recognised through this award but also through the rugby community’s support. As a much-loved member of Six Nations Rugby team - who stepped back from his role to focus full-time on his incredible fundraising efforts - Craig's journey has been a source of inspiration. Last April, he won the Special Recognition Award alongside Kevin Sinfield at the Sport Industry Awards.
Earlier this year, Craig and his family presented the match ball at the Guinness Men's Six Nations fixture between Wales and France in Cardiff - Craig having previously been a commercial director for the Welsh Rugby Union - an emotional moment that underscored his deep connections within the sport. His efforts have been widely praised, with the wider rugby family uniting behind him in a show of solidarity.
Since his diagnosis, Craig has continued to push forward with his fundraising goals, participating in walks and other initiatives. His story has resonated across the rugby world, with many reflecting on his years of service and contributions to the game. As he continues to battle his illness, his impact on the community and his legacy continue to inspire.
