Johnny Sexton produced a captain’s performance as Ireland saw off Scotland 19-12 to begin the Andy Farrell era in style.
Sexton – who has replaced the retired Rory Best as captain – scored all 19 points in a tight battle at the Aviva Stadium.
The fly-half crossed for a try and kicked four penalties and a conversion, while Adam Hastings scored all of Scotland’s points.
Scotland had a chance to draw level in the second half, while trailing 13-6, but Stuart Hogg knocked on just as he was about to score a try.
Ireland host Wales in Round 2, while Scotland face England.
