Jonny Gray and Adam Hastings have been recalled by Gregor Townsend ahead of Scotland’s Guinness Six Nations tie against Italy on Saturday.

Gray and Hastings are also joined by uncapped Glen Young and one-cap Ross Thompson as Scotland look to bounce back from consecutive defeats against Wales and France.

Fly-half Hastings was initially omitted from Townsend’s original squad but has been in good form for club side Gloucester Rugby, while Exeter lock Gray had been ruled out with injury.

Uncapped Young, 27, adds another option at second row after Marshall Sykes was rule out with injury, while Thompson adds depth in the backs.

Townsend has lost five players through injury in all, with Nick Haining, Oli Kebble, Ollie Smith, and Rufus McLean also unavailable.

Scotland opened their 2022 Guinness Six Nations Championship with a 20-17 victory over England but have since slipped to defeats to Wales and France to end any hopes of finishing top of the pile.

They travel to Rome to face an Italy side also smarting after a 57-6 defeat to Ireland in Round 3, leaving Kieran Crowley’s side still searching for their first win of the Championship.

Kick-off at the Stadio Olimpico is at 2.15pm on Saturday.
