Scotland achieved a record victory over Italy as Gregor Townsend’s men ran in eight tries at BT Murrayfield on Super Saturday to defeat the visitors 52-10 in Edinburgh.

The hosts conceded an early try to Italy captain Luca Bigi as they looked to bounce back from consecutive Guinness Six Nations defeats to Wales and Ireland.

But tries from hooker Dave Cherry and Duhan van der Merwe saw Scotland take a lead which they never relinquished as Darcy Graham and Huw Jones added further first-half scores.

Italy’s discipline resulted in three players being sin-binned as Scott Steele and Sam Johnson also got their names on the scoresheet along with second tries for both Van der Merwe and Cherry.

The bonus-point triumph means Scotland could still finish the 2021 Championship in second place if they can beat France with a bonus-point in their rearranged Round 3 fixture.
