Ireland secured the Grand Slam for just the third time with a famous 24-15 win over England at Twickenham.

Social media users were quick to acknowledge the performance of this Irish team as tries from Garry Ringrose, CJ Stander and Jacob Stockdale sealed the win.

England responded with tries from Elliot Daly and one from Jonny May, but it wasn’t enough to stop Ireland claiming their third Championship in five years.

Former Irish international Jamie Heaslip, who retired last month, was part of the side that won the Grand Slam in 2009 and labelled this current crop of players ‘legends’.

Heaslip was one of many rugby players, past and present, to offer their congratulations to Ireland, including Jonny Wilkinson and Ronan O’Gara.

Former England flanker Lewis Moody didn’t look best pleased at having to wear an Ireland shirt after losing a bet on the game’s outcome.

There were plenty of messages from other sports people too, such as Irish Alpine skier Conor Lyle.

Away from sport, prominent Irish pop stars were keen to congratulate the side on their St Patrick’s Day victory, and there was even a message from the Irish ambassador to the USA.
