Louis Rees-Zammit has capped off a memorable first Guinness Six Nations by winning Try of the Championship for his sensational second score against Scotland.
The 20-year-old wing star took the honour by a landslide with 41.6% of the votes as rugby fans had their say on the best finishes from this year’s action.
Rees-Zammit’s impressive score proved decisive in the Round 2 meeting with Scotland as his second try of the game helped Wales secure a nail-biting 25-24 triumph in Edinburgh.
Six magic moments in Wales’ Championship victory
Wales were behind on the scoreboard in the closing 15 minutes but Rees-Zammit – who already boasted a try and assist to his name – took the bull by the horns to win the match.
Gathering the ball on the right flank, the Gloucester Rugby man breezed past fellow wing Duhan van der Merwe – hardly among the slower players on the BT Murrayfield pitch.
He still had lots to do but did so with aplomb, combining touch with superb awareness to kick the ball over the top of Stuart Hogg and chase down what proved to be the match-winning score.
Rees-Zammit finished the 2021 Championship with four tries to his name as Wayne Pivac’s men clinched the Guinness Six Nations title, only just missing out on the Grand Slam.
And now the talented youngster also has another prize to his name after beating off competition from eight other tries to be crowned the Try of the Championship winner.
Guinness Six Nations stars dazzle in domestic action
His nearest rival was Ireland winger Keith Earls, who picked up 17.5% of the vote for his own brilliant effort straight from the training ground in the 32-18 victory over England on Super Saturday.
Third place went to Van der Merwe for his bulldozing score against the Red Rose in Scotland’s memorable Round 1 Calcutta Cup win – their first at Twickenham in 38 years.
Damian Penaud just missed out on the podium for his finish against England, which received 11.2% of the vote, while his try against Scotland was fifth with 6.3%.
Jonny May’s spectacular finish against Italy received 3.4% of the votes while France’s Arthur Vincent (3.4%) and Italy’s Luca Sperandio (3.0%) completed the list of nominees.
