'Dad's happy that he might get to see me represent Scotland'

Reuben Logan
Reuben Logan says he cannot wait to sing the national anthem after joining up with the Scotland U20 squad for the first time.

Having been born down south, Logan, the son of 70-cap Scotland winger Kenny Logan and TV presenter Gabby Logan, was named in the England under-20 elite player squad as recently as September.

However, the Northampton Saints back-rower will not be adding England U20 caps to his previous U18 appearances for the country because he has decided to represent the country of his father going forward.

Explaining the decision as Scotland U20 build up to their tournament opener at home to Italy at Hive Stadium in Edinburgh on Friday, 19-year-old former Wasps man Logan said: “Well, there were a number of reasons.

“When I was younger, I was involved in the English [age-grade] set-up because I wanted to sign for an English club. It’s much easier to get involved with an English club if you're in the English pathway.

“As I got older, opportunities in England weren't necessarily there. I was named in the England U20 elite player squad at the start of the season, but I wasn't necessarily getting what I thought I was going to get in terms of an opportunity.

“You can find pictures of me online wearing a Scottish shirt [at the Euros football] last summer or wearing a Scottish shirt when I was younger.

“I've always been a Scottish fan and when you see your dad play for Scotland and you see all the rugby things around the house from his career growing up it's obviously quite inspiring.

“So, when you consider yourself Scottish and you are looking for an opportunity it's obviously quite an easy choice to make. I can’t wait to represent Scotland if given the chance during the U20 Six Nations.”

Logan is now part of a 34-man wider squad that is based in Edinburgh this week preparing for the tournament to get going and he added: “Dad’s pretty happy, I think. I think he pretended when I was with England that he was, happy with it, but he wasn't really and he's made that very clear now.

“He struggled with it and I think he's very, very happy now and excited that he might get to see me represent Scotland.

“I think mum was just as emotional as my dad because, obviously, she's seen my dad wear the Scotland shirt before and now she may see me wear it.

“I sent her the media photos we did recently and she got quite emotional seeing them and me wearing the thistle.”

Scotland finished bottom of the U20 Six Nations table last year and winless.

They lost to Friday’s opponents 47-14 on the road, but since then they have won the World Rugby Trophy on home soil last summer which means they will be back in the Championship in a few months’ time for the first time since 2019.

And Logan, set to be deployed at No.8 by the Scots in the coming weeks, wants the team to build up some momentum for that showpiece event during this Six Nations.

“In the last few weeks I've absolutely loved coming into this Scotland U20 environment,” he stated.

“The guys have been really nice to me, all the boys are great and I think we've got a great squad so I'm really looking forward to Italy and the rest of the Six Nations. We want to create some momentum and give the crowd something to cheer about.

“And top of my list going into the games is going to be singing Flower of Scotland, I am very excited for that.”

The Scotland U20 squad for Friday night’s match is due to be named on Wednesday by head coach Kenny Murray.
