Taine Basham ran in a hat-trick as Wales proved too hot to handle for Italy at the Stadio Danilo Martelli, running out 12-42 winners.

The Welshmen scored the first try of the game with 14 minutes on the clock as Basham broke free from the back of a scrum and dived over, Cai Evans added the two points with a tough kick from the touchline.

And Basham had his and Wales’ second try just minutes later after the No.8 cut a hole in the Italian defence to go over between the posts. Evans once again added the extras.

Wales continued to apply pressure and took a stronghold in the game with a well worked third try finished off by second row Ed Scragg and converted by Evans to make it 21-0 at the break.

Basham picked up where he left off in the second half and it didn’t take him long to notch his hat-trick with a pick and go from the back of a scrum. Evans maintained his perfect record from the tee to complement the secure bonus points.

Italy did get a try back on the hour mark when the previously sinbinned winger Michael Mba raced down the touchline to dot down.

Wales hit straight back however and ran in a fifth try through Dafydd Buckland and with Evans off the pitch, Sam Costelow added the extras.

Italy thought they would have the final word when full-back Jacopo Trulla went over but Wales were having none of it and reinforced their lead straight from the restart, Ioan Davies the last try scorer of the match.
