Report & Highlights: England continue winning run with fiery victory against Pumas

England made it a clean sweep of autumn victories - and three wins this year against the Pumas - with a fiery 27-23 result against Argentina.

The first half in London mixed control with flashes of brilliance. Fly-half George Ford opened the scoring with a trademark drop goal before centre Max Ojomoh, on only his second cap, seized on a loose ball to score England’s first try. The Bath man then produced a moment of real class, delivering a pinpoint cross-field kick for Immanuel Feyi-Waboso to finish in the corner. Ford converted both tries but missed a late penalty attempt.

Argentina struggled to find rhythm, their attack blunted by England’s rush defence and their kicking game offering little reward. Fly-half Tomás Albornoz landed a long-range penalty to get the visitors on the board, but handling errors and misfiring lineouts repeatedly stalled their progress.

England’s pack looked solid, with openside Sam Underhill and Luke Cowan-Dickie prominent in defence, though the hooker saw a try chalked off by the TMO just before the whistle.

England headed into the break with a 17-3 lead - something most home fans would surely have taken before the match.

The hosts returned from the break with greater control, leaning on the power of back rower Ben Earl, whose carrying once again tilted the contest in their favour. The hosts began to dictate territory and tempo, though Argentina - buoyed by two strong wins earlier in the series, against Wales and Scotland - stayed stubbornly in the fight and continued to challenge at the breakdown.

Defence has been England’s hallmark in 2025, and it showed again. Even when the Pumas stitched phases together, England’s organisation inside their own 22 kept them at arm’s length. Ford managed the game smartly, trading kicks with Santiago Carreras, the year’s leading Test points-scorer, who provided the Pumas' sharpest attacking moments.

As the final quarter arrived, England’s gainline success helped them control field position, with the electric Feyi-Waboso offering a threat out wide. Argentina attempted a late push, but their low kicking volume left them short of territory, before a final surge upfield took them deep into England territory. The hosts, however, closed out the match with maturity, escaping danger and ultimately defeat with opportunist flair.

An 11th straight English victory was ultimately secured through defensive precision, discipline, and the carrying strength of their back row — enough to hold off a committed and dangerous Pumas side.

⭐️ Quilter Player of the Match:

Max Ojomoh (ENG)

"The build-up in the week was class, and I've been waiting for this opportunity for so long. I'm just glad we got the win..."

(On his 'swagger' during training for Argentina) "It's not swagger. I understand what my role is and I was waiting for the opportunity to take it today. The boys gave me a lot of energy in the week; I had a lot of support behind me and I'm just glad I got to bring it to the field.

(On the experience around him) "I've got Fordy: over 100 caps; Slade on my outside; Spenny [Ben Spencer] who I play with at the club. A plethora of experience around me. I just had to do my job and then lean on them when I needed to."
