Six Nations Women’s U21 Series: England lay down a marker in Scotland

England breezed past Scotland in a 51-12 victory at Hive Stadium to kick off their Six Nations Women's U21 Series with a bonus-point win.

Hat-tricks from Solana Shaw de Leon and Carmela Morrall, alongside a brace from Molly Bunker and tries from Hayley Jones and Aisha Jah, capped off a dominant performance in Edinburgh.

Scotland managed two tries of their won, via powerful finishes from Nicole Flynn, but they were not enough to garner any points from the hosts' efforts.

It was a scrappy start to the game as both sides gave away penalties at regular intervals, which stemmed any attacking flow.

England began to find their rhythm, however, and Morrall benefited when she ran a thunderous line against the grain and smashed over the line from short range with 11 minutes gone.

The second quickly followed as Bunker reacted quickest to turnover ball and strolled across the line untouched. Scotland worked their way back into the game after Bunker’s score and strung some phases together, but again the visitors took advantage of turnover ball when Ella Cromack fed Morrall for her second.

Jones was next to get in on the act when she burrowed over with a pick and go, before the visitors scored an early try of the series contender.

England turned Scotland over again and threw the ball wide inside their own 22. Grace White made 60 metres before Shaw de Leon linked up and flew under the posts, making it 29-0 at half-time.

The England full-back opened the visitors’ second-half account as well when Morrall committed the Scotland defence before giving Shaw de Leon an easy finish in the left corner.

Scotland carried on fighting, however, and Flynn scored her first by cutting back and beating two defenders before diving over from short range.

Jah racked up England’s seventh with a pick and go, before Shaw de Leon brought up her hat-trick with another smart finish, this time in the right-hand corner.

Flynn then completed her brace with a superb finish, fending off two defenders before grounding the ball in the corner for Scotland's second try but it was England who had the last laugh.

Player of the Match Morrall deservedly completed her hat-trick when she crossed the whitewash with the clock in the red to round off an excellent performance by the visitors.
